Important Notice: Responsibilities of Staff & Students to the Unilag Brand

The University of Lagos was established by an Act of parliament in 1962. Over the years, the University has succeeded in building a brand by sustaining best practice. The University has consistently upheld the image of the brand, while its integrity and quality has become universally accepted within and outside the country.

However, the image was almost marred by the 2016 students’ unrest. Consequently, the Senate and Council of the University took a number of far reaching decisions to promote industrial harmony amongst stakeholders.

In view of recent developments, it is imperative to remind all members of the University community of their responsibility towards the sustenance of the University brand.

For the avoidance of doubt, the attention of every stakeholder is hereby drawn to the following segments of existing policies guiding our communal involvement.

These include the following:

  • “…as an ambassador of the University, every staff has the responsibility to protect the name and image of the University. S/he should therefore be conscious of his or her behaviours at all times within and outside the University, and should conduct himself or herself with decorum at all times in recognition that to do otherwise would bring the name of the University into disrepute”.
  • “…they should treat one another with utmost respect, and under no circumstance should a staff engage, in the course of its duty, in physical or verbal assault with any other staff…”
  • “…posting of any materials on the internet or on any social media platform about the University, its Principal Officers, lecturers, and other staff of the University in order to disparage, ridicule, shame or disgrace such Principal Officer, lecturer or staff or undermine the good image of the University”.
  • “…it is a misconduct for any member of a meeting to post a record or video of any meeting on any social media platform, except the rules governing such meeting permit the posting. A member found guilty of this misconduct shall face disciplinary action and if found guilty shall face any punishment ranging from warning to dismissal…” as provided for by extant rules/policies of engagement.

In view of the above, all actions in violation of these regulations will not be condoned and will be appropriately dealt with. Members are expected to act with decorum at all times.
